How to make yourself productive and useful during this COVID-19 ‘lockdown’

This is the most difficult moment for any person. It is challenging and frightening to just stay at home and not doing what one is used to.

This covid 19 has disrupted our life routine very much to the extent that we are getting stressed and depressed. Worry and anxiety have clouded our lives every moment press briefs from the government pop up on our tv screens.

Social media is not helping things either. It is awash with quite disturbing videos of the ravaging effects of the pandemic especially from the new epicenters of the coronavirus like Italy, the US among others.

Coffins and body bags are not fun, are they? So this calls for sobriety and calmness. We must adopt new ways of survival by distracting ourselves from these disturbing updates as we still maintain safety measures for ourselves and our loved ones. The big question is this, how do we do this?

Exploit that latent talent.

This is that time one may practice that gift he has been shelving as a result of busy schedules. Everyone has a talent or a liking of doing something. If you used to play the piano or any other musical instrument, this is the time to practice it. You could be having an old guitar stuck somewhere in the garage, pick it and start striking those codes again. It will surprise you how refreshing this is!if you loved cooking, this is that time you can practice that difficult recipe a friend of yours from  Ethiopia gave you. Do what you love doing within the confines of your home.

Bond with your family.

If you are lucky to have a family, it is an opportune time to really spend a great time with them. Remember that this time has always been scarce due to our normal crazy schedules but there is plenty of time now for this, thanks to covid19. Children love attention from their parents. Spoil them with it by engaging with them in play, speaking and listening to them, watching with them their favorite programs among many other activities. It will surprise you how awesome this is to everyone! It also allows you to know your children in a deeper sense thus improving your parental skills and relations for you are likely to decipher ways of meeting every child at his/her point of need.

Read that ‘big’ book

For book warmers this is that time of flipping through those books we have been intending to, but due to time constraints, we never been able to. Reading is like traveling. As one devours the plot of the text, so does his mind travel with the story to the destinations that the author has weaved. Reading a good book is not only refreshing but also very informative. Engage your mind actively by flipping through these pages!

Spruce up your home

There is that paint you have always wanted to have on one wall of your house? Have you always loved flowers, potted or planted in a garden at the back yard of your house? This is that time, to make your home look like you have always desired and if it does look like your dream, then you can assist in maintaining it so. There is nothing as refreshing as converting a space into something new and beautiful by oneself. Take that brush and paint that wall into those specifications that you have always wanted. Create that beautiful garden. Plant them flowers and take care of them as you would a child or a puppy. It will pay off that time they begin blossoming into a myriad of awesome petals. You will look at them and feel fulfilled.

In essence, we should not allow this covid 19 to bring us down. We should be strong, occupy our minds positively until our lives normalize.
