Coronavirus: sad news as Kenya allegedly records first coronavirus-related suicide in a Nakuru Quarantine facility

A 27-year old South African woman who had been placed under mandatory quarantine in Nakuru has allegedly committed suicide.

The suicide victim got back into the country on March 24, 2020 and was consequently placed under mandatory 14-days quarantine following the Kenyan Government’s recent directives aimed at containing the spread of the coronavirus in Kenya.

Defiance

Elizabeth Holloway, the coronavirus suicide victim arrived in Kenya through the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, JKIA and was advised to self- quarantine for the mandatory 14 days.

Preliminary reports issued by Rift Valley Police Commander Marcus Ocholla however indicate that Ms. Holloway defied the directive and proceeded to Mahiu Mahiu in Naivasha where she worked at a flower farm company.

Curious members of the public and other employees at the Flower farm company notified public health officers who forcefully picked Ms. Holloway and placed her under forced quarantine at the Kenya Industrial Training Institute on Thursday,  March 25, 2020.

Ms. Holloway is believed to have committed suicide by hanging herself on Friday March 28, 2020.

“Health officials broke into the room where the South African nationality had been isolated and found her dead, ” said the police boss.

COVID-19 Results

Ms. Elizabeth Holloway had her samples taken for testing and analysis but the results were yet to be released by the Kenya Medical; Research Institute, KEMRI.

Her body was taken to the Nakuru County Morgue for postmortem.

Meanwhile, the police are trying to get in touch with the South African Embassy for further action.
