Government freezes employment for the next three years; read the full details below
Reports reaching our media team indicate that unemployed Kenyans especially the youth will be forced to tarmack for longer after CS Ukur Yattani announced the government’s plan to freeze employment in the civil service for the next three years.
Consequently, all government agencies have been directed to avoid requesting for money for new expenditure from today henceforth.
The Public service commission, TSC and other affected parties will henceforth tender requests for recurrent expenditure only.
This move by treasury is aimed at reducing the wage bill and keeping it within manageable limits.
This declaration will also affect other sectors which will have to seek approval before executing any new projects.
According to Yattani all new projects will have to be approved by the executive first before money is allocated.
Ongoing projects may also stagnate as treasury tightens the noose on unnecessary expenditure.
This announcement comes at a time when the education sector is facing numerous challenges including lack of enough facilities to ensure the safety of learners once schools reopen.
Besides, the Teachers Service Commission is short of teachers who can comfortably implement the curriculum while maintaining social distance.
Statistics indicate that approximately 30% of the employees in the civil service are aged between 51-60 years.
Many of them will this be exiting service soon. Does this mean that they will not be replaced?
