TSC TEACHERS TO LEAD COMMUNITY LEARNING PROGRAMMES AS FROM SEPTEMBER, THIS IS HOW IT WILL WORK

In a nutshell;

The community learning program is set to commence in September 2020. It will target disadvantaged learners who cannot access digital learning platforms during this covid-19 pandemic.

Learning will take place in social halls, under trees, and other community spaces with teachers currently on TSC payroll leading the lessons.

Community leaders such as chiefs and nyumba Kumi will coordinate the program and find teachers.

COMMUNITY LEARNING

Education CS professor George Magoha on Thursday, July 30 announced government plans to roll out community learning programs targeting students who cannot access digital learning now that schools are closed in September.

The new program will see learning take place in community spaces such as in social halls and under trees.

The community learning program will be led by teachers currently on the government payroll.

The new program is a shift from online learning which has left many learners especially those from disadvantaged communities disenfranchised.

HOW WILL IT WORK?

The question ringing in many people’s minds right now is how will the community learning program work?

According to the CS, chiefs and other community figures the likes of nyumba Kumi will be actively involved in coordinating the program and mapping out teachers who will offer the lessons.

The program shall offer a level playing field for all the learners both in public and private schools.

TUITION

Most parents especially those with children in private schools have enrolled them for online classes being offered through Google classroom and zoom. Others have pooled resources to pay for tuition services so that their children are not left behind.

“Although the KICD is airing lessons via television and radio, there is still a large number of children who cannot access them,” said the CS.

Teachers will offer communal lessons from wherever they are and not necessarily where they are stationed at.

GUIDELINES

TSC Boss Dr. Nancy Macharia confirmed that the commission was in the process of formulating guidelines for teachers who have been receiving full salaries since the onset of the pandemic to spearhead the programme.

The teachers will group learners, ensure that they wear face masks and observe social distance.

Teachers are also expected to inculcate moral values in learners as they offer the lessons following the surge in teenage pregnancies in the country.

This announcement was made after a stakeholders meeting to review the impact of covid-19 on education.
