Schools selected as COVID-19 Isolation centres in Nairobi
Here is a list of schools selected as coronavirus isolation centres in Nairobi as KUPPET opposes the use of rural schools
Following the Government’s directive that County Governments work hand in hand with principals to map out at least 20 boarding schools in each county to be used as coronavirus isolation centers in case the number of COVID 19 positive cases soars, the following boarding schools in Nairobi have been selected: St. Georges, Moi Girls Nairobi, Kibra High School, Jamhuri High School and the Kenya High School.
This selection comes amidst KUPPET’s call for better cordination between state agencies before selecting rural schools to be used as COVID-19 isolation centres.
KUPPET vice chair Julius Korir said that principals and support staff handling the isolated coronavirus positive cases in rural areas are ill-prepared since they do not have masks, disinfectants, gumboots, gloves and other coronavirus protective gear.
KUPPET Secretary General Akelo Misori also said the school staff should be protected from the coronavirus pandemic.
Mr Korir said that the Government should start using schools in other counties after reviewing the experiences of schools used as coronavirus isolation centers in Nairobi.
Several national schools in the North Rift have also been identified as isolation centers and their principals alerted.
He further added that the Ministry of Education and the TSC have not been adequately prepared on the matter.
Besides, the Ministry of Health has not made adequate provisions for the upkeep of coronavirus isolated cases, an issue that may force principals to deplete school resources.
“School heads are not psychologically prepared for the intense work involved in handling COVID-19 cases.”
