Interesting details have emerged from the 2019 Kenya’s Population and Housing Census Report.

Below are some of the shocking revelations revealed by the 2019 census report:

1. According to the 2019 population and housing census, 7 million Kenyans have never attended school.

2. Secondly, the number of the female working population is 50.2 %.

3. About 6.9 million Kenyans who were in various learning institutions failed to complete their studies.

4. 2019 Census further showed that 22.3 million Kenyans were economically active.

5. Kikuyus are the most populous community in Kenya. The population of Kikuyus stands at 8.15 million.

6. Kikuyus are followed by the Luhya people whose population stands at 6.82 million.

7. In the third position is Kalenjins with a population of 6.36 million.
8. Luos follow Kalenjins with a total population of 5.1 million.

9. In the fifth position are Kamba people whose population stands at 4.66 million.

10. Kenya’s tribal spread has not changed save for the Maasai who replaced the Turkana people in the top 10 list.

11. These figures are likely to affect Kenya’s political landscape in 2022 given that President Uhuru Kenyatta, ODM leader Raila Odinga, Deputy President William Ruto, Former Vice Presidents Musalia Mudavadi and Kalonzo Musyoka hail from the big 5. They represent a total of 31.06 million which translates to 65 per cent of Kenya’s total population.

12. The Kikuyu Community recorded the highest increase in population within 2009-2019. Kikuyus have multiplied by 1.5 million.

13. Luhyas have increased by 1.49 million.

14. Kalenjins, on the other hand, has increased by 1.4 million whereas Luos have multiplied by 1.07 million.

15. Kambas have increased by 700, 000, the Mijikenda by 530, 000 and Kisiis by 490, 000.

16. Other tribes that have recorded an increase in their population according to the 2019 Kenya Housing and Population Census report include Kenya Somalis who have increased by 400, 000, Merus by 330, 000 and Maasais by 350, 000.

16. Based on the above statistics, Kenya’s tribal ranking remains the same with Kenya’s top 10 most populous tribal ranking remaining the same save for the Turkana community which has been replaced by the Maasai.

17. According to the 2019 Kenya Census Report, the five least populous tribes include the Dahalo whose population stands at 575, Kenyan Americans (596), Gosha (685), El Molo (1, 104) and Konso (1, 299).

18. Kenya’s 2019 Census results were processed within two months.

19. Zachary Mwangi, the Director-General of the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics revealed that the number of Kenyans living in rural areas is more than double the number of urban dwellers.

20. The number of people living in urban areas increased from 24.1 per cent in 2009 to 31.2 per cent in 2019.
