EDUCATION BREAKING NEWS: REDUCE THE COST OF SCHOOL UNIFORMS, SAYS MINISTRY

THIS IS WHY THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION WANTS SCHOOLS TO REDUCE THE COST OF UNIFORMS

Basic Education Principal Secretary Dr Belio Kipsang has directed school heads to devise ways of reducing the cost of all school uniforms in Kenya.

According to Dr Kpsang, the unwarranted hike in the cost of school uniforms has caused agony for most parents especially those who survive from hand to mouth.

According to the PS Education, some learners who sat for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education, KCPE were still holed up in their homes, unable to report to secondary schools of their choice due to the high cost of school uniforms.

EXTRA SCHOOL FEES

Apart from the high cost of uniforms, PS Kipsang has also warned schools which are still charging extra levies such as PTA, remedial and motivation fee terming them illegal.

Other extra charges imposed on parents include examination registration and processing fee and stationery fee.

According to the Ministry of Education, parents should pay fees as stipulated in the table below

TOWN SCHOOLS

The maximum fees for all national and extra county secondary schools located in major towns is capped at Kshs 75, 798 PER YEAR.

The Government is planning to subsidise this fee with Kshs 22, 244. The rest of the amount should be raised by the parent or guardian.

BOARDING SCHOOLS

The  Kenyan Government will also facilitate the education of each learner in boarding school equal to the capitation offered for learners in day schools.

The parents will have to cater for boarding fees applicable to different categories of schools and their location.

Category A schools include all National schools, extra county secondary schools located in the following major towns: Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Nyeri, Kisumu, Thika and Eldoret.

Category B secondary schools include boarding schools located in other areas except for Nairobi, Nakuru, Kisumu, Eldoret, Mombasa, Nyeri, and Thika
