Grade 9 learners across Kenya are currently undertaking a landmark academic exerciseโ€”selecting subjects that will shape their future careers under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

The ongoing subject selection process, which began on June 9, 2025, will continue until June 30 through an online portal launched by the Ministry of Education.

It represents a major shift from the traditional exam-focused system to a model anchored in learnersโ€™ interests, talents, and long-term career aspirations.

According to the Ministry of Education, over 1.2 million Grade 9 learners are expected to take part in the exercise.

Under the CBC framework, students are required to select one of three career pathways:ย Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM);ย Social Sciences; orย Sports and Performing Arts.

Each pathway includes subject combinations designed to nurture specific competencies and professional interests.

Atย Kiambu Township Primary Schoolย in Kiambu, the atmosphere among students was one of both excitement and cautious decision-making.

โ€œThis is a transformational moment in our education system,โ€ said Headteacherย Rahab Gatiba. โ€œFor the first time, our learners are choosing subjects not just to pass exams but to build real careers. Weโ€™re offering one-on-one mentorship and digital tools to support informed choices.โ€

Senior schools are mandated to offer at least two pathways, with STEM being compulsory. The subject selection system features more thanย 30 disciplines, including Computer Studies, Media Technology, Agriculture, French, and Performing Arts.

Teachers are playing a central role in guiding learners through the new system.ย Joseph Njeru, a teacher assisting students with the portal, said the CBC model is reshaping how students perceive their future.

โ€œIโ€™ve seen learners who were previously unsure now confidently talking about becoming software engineers, musicians, or environmental scientists,โ€ Mr. Njeru remarked. โ€œThis system is opening doors we never imagined before.โ€

He added that while some learners needed initial guidance, the portal has been user-friendly with help from teachers and ICT support staff.

To facilitate a smooth rollout, the Ministry has trained more thanย 9,000 school headsย and provided additional support to schools catering to learners with special needs, ensuring inclusivity and flexibility throughout the process.

As Kenya deepens its transition to the CBC model, education stakeholders believe that aligning studentsโ€™ choices with national development priorities will help address the long-standing mismatch between education and the job market.
