The Teachers Service Commission, TSC which is responsible for the hiring and promotion of teachers in Kenya was allocated 2.0 billion for the recruitment of 5, 000 teachers on permanent and pensionable terms and another 2.4 billion for the hiring of 10, 000 intern teachers.
Worth noting is the fact that teachers who receive administrative warnings or face disciplinary cases will have their promotions delayed or they may not get promoted at all if they engage in gross misconduct since they are considered unreliable and irresponsible.
“Classroom teachers were converted to grades exclusively reserved for institutional administrators. In other cases, deputies and senior teachers were wrongly captured as heads. In some schools, staffing levels in terms of the required administrators exceeded the required number, contrary to the TSC staffing norms,” added Nancy Macharia.
The Teachers Service Commission, TSC has promoted 1, 000 primary school teachers to work in secondary schools.
this is a reprieve for the 1, 000 teachers who attained higher qualifications but were still stuck at the primary level.
Even as the Teachers Service Commission, TSC is planning to recruit 5000 teachers on Permanent and Pensionable Terms, there is a looming teacher shortage crisis as 30, 000 are set to exit service by December after attaining the retirement age.
