KUCCPS News Today;  The Kenya Universities and Colleges Placement Service, KUCCPS has reviewed and implemented key changes in the minimum entry requirements for students wishing to pursue Bachelor of Education and Diploma in Education courses this year.

New Entry Requirements for TSC Teachers; Recruitment Guidelines

In 2028, the Teachers Service Commission will review the recruitment requirements and guidelines to fit the new CBC curriculum demands.

Meanwhile, students wishing to be admitted to various universities and colleges by the KUCCPS placement board will have to undertake training for at least five and half years and major like their law, medicine, and engineering counterparts.

Teaching practice will now take two full terms since the education students will take three teaching subjects as opposed to the current two teaching subjects.

This will help the Teachers Service Commission deal with the glaring teacher shortages in the new teaching areas such as creative arts, music, and local languages introduced courtesy of the new Competency-based curriculum.

Earlier, the Commission had proposed to scrap the Bachelor of Education degree but interested parties especially universities weighed in forcing the Commission to back down its plan to kill the degree option.

The new TSC entry grade for education degree courses stands at KCSE mean grade of C+ Plus with a minimum of B- minus in the three teaching areas/ subjects of specialization for instance Mathematics, Chemistry, and Biology.

In the newly adopted KUCCPS proposals given by TSC, students wishing to pursue a Bachelor of Education in Technology must have scored a B- Minus in the three subjects they would like to specialize in and at least a C Plain in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry, the foundational subjects for any technology-related course.

“The areas identified in these courses are related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) pathway, careers and technology strand,” partly reads the proposal.

The teachers exiting universities and colleges will hence be fully prepared to handle grade seven learners in Junior Secondary Schools up to Grade 12 learners in senior secondary.

KUCCPS applicants wishing to pursue a Bachelor of Education in Science and Agriculture are required to have at least a B- minus in the teaching subjects and at least a C plain in English and Mathematics.

“The areas identified in these courses are related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) pathway, careers and technology strand,” reads the proposal.

Bachelor of Science (education) on the other hand will require students to have at least a B (plain) in two teaching subjects and a C (plain) in English and mathematics.

Bachelor of Education (arts, fine arts, german, guidance and counseling, french, home science and technology, home economics, physical education) and Bachelor of Education (early childhood) are required to have a minimum of B- in two teaching subjects and a C (plain) in English, Kiswahili and mathematics. These teachers will guide learners in the visual and performing arts pathway.

Bachelor of Education in special needs students will be required to have a C+ in two teaching subjects and a C (plain) in mathematics, English, and Kiswahili

Note: In all the degree programmes, students will also be required to pursue additional professional courses in curriculum development, psychology, and sociology in education, mentorship and coaching programmes, performance management, education action research management, foundations in education, and educational leadership.

Diploma in Education students is required to have a minimum of C+ and a similar grade in two teaching subjects. They are also required to have scored a C (Plain) in English and mathematics for science-based courses and a C- in mathematics for art-based courses.

The diploma programme at the universities will prepare the students to teach in pre-primary (PP1 and PP2) according to TSC.

A diploma in education in special needs at the university level requires a mean grade of C (plain) and C (plain) in two teaching subjects.
