Panic as a section of Teachers may not receive their April 2020 Salaries

Following the spread of the coronavirus pandemic in Kenya, many sectors have been greatly hit including the education sector.

The restricted movements in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kilifi, and Kwale counties have heightened the situation making it worse for many Kenyans.

Consequently, some civil servants and some workers attached to the private sector in Kenya have been forced to go home with half salaries.

Following the abrupt closure of learning institutions, teachers have not been left out.

Some teachers are likely to miss out on their April 2020 paychecks. This section of teachers encompasses those working in private institutions and those serving on BOM terms.

This is because these teachers’ salaries largely depend on the fee paid by parents.

Therefore, if parents have not cleared fees for some of the learners then schools will be crippled and unable to remunerate their teachers.

Our hope is that some school heads will be humane enough and sensitive to the plight of BOM teachers and pay them their dues.

Some rogue heads may use the coronavirus pandemic to make life unbearable for this group of teachers.

No bills

Let us not forget that much as the coronavirus pandemic has hit our economy, the Government had already set aside funds for all public schools. Besides, most of the parents had already paid school fees for term 1, 2020.

Given that the schools are not footing some bills such as electricity or purchasing items such as books , printing paper and other stationery.

Hence, there should not be any excuse for not paying such teachers.

Lesson

Just like one author put it, Coronavirus should leave us a better country. This should be a lesson to teachers who are fully dependent on TSC salaries and academic papers.

It is time they made hay while the sun shines. Those who were wise enough are enjoying the long stay at home as they go about managing their own businesses and farms.

For sure, their fall back plans will shield them during these trying moments.
