The Kenyan political class has always considered itself a rare breed of humans. It has perfected the art of putting its interests first often to the detriment of the Wanjikus that it purports to represent. Specifically, the Kenyan politician’s greed and individualism stinks to the high heavens not forgetting their double standards. Almost the entire pack is obsessed with amassing wealth in fraudulent ways.
Greed and sycophancy
It is not a surprise that we have had cases where MPs gobble national government and constituency development funds- money meant to elevate the living standards of their constituents. Politicians in Kenya are known for sycophancy and extreme bootlicking to the powers that be for their political survival. Independence in thinking and decision making is a no go zone for them. Those who try to think freely are usually intimidated and their political careers get ruined. It is a political cartel that has succeeded in arm twisting every one to dance to its tune. Is it a wonder that a few days ago we were treated to a drama involving the Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro (the so-called Tanga Tanga ) and the nominated MP Maina Kamanda (The Kieleweke) in a church in Murang’ a? The altercation between the two groups was later extended to the Royal Media Services where the police followed the Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro attempting to arrest him.
The double standards
At the Royal Media Services, the nation was further treated to more drama. Several Tanga Tanga team members of parliament thronged the VIP studio lounge and made serious allegations against the government for using state agencies to oppress some leaders for their different political stands. Alice Wahome MP for Kandara claimed sensationally that the Permanent Secretary for interior had sent a contingent of police to arrest the youthful Kiharu MP apparently for being on the Tanga Tanga political wing. The questions that beg answers are: Where were these politicians when common citizens faced the same oppression by the same government operatives?
Such incidences have been common in this country. In the 2017 presidential poll, we had several people who got killed and others maimed by the same police for protesting against the perceived compromised electoral body IEBC. Does the name Baby Pendo ring a bell?
The business tycoon Jimmy Wanjigi too faced the wrath for being on the “other side.” A big police contingent marooned his residence in a bid to arrest him then. Where was HON. Alice Wahome, Ndindi Nyoro and Ichungwa Kimani to raise issues on oppression by state agencies as they loudly did yesterday? You see, they were comfortable cheering on the massacre that afflicted the people who were perceived to be threats to them.
The rule of law
The Kenyan political elite must entrench the rule of law. As Martin Luther King Junior once said, injustice somewhere is injustice everywhere. The rule of law should apply equally. Selective application of the law should not have a chance in a civilized nation. The political class has a responsibility of ensuring that good practices regarding the law are entrenched.
