How KPSEA will be Graded

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has shed some light on how the KPSEA 2022/2023 results will be arrived at.

In the new KPSEA Knec grading system, candidates will be ranked in a scale of 1-4.

Grade A is equivalent to 4 ( Exceeding Expectation)

Grade B is equivalent to 3 ( Meeting Expectation)

Grade C is equivalent to 2 ( Approaching Expectation)

Grades E and D, are equivalent to 1 ( Below Expectation)

Candidates who perform extremely well in KPSEA national examinations will be awarded 4 which is interpreted as Exceeding Expectation.

Candidates who will score above average will bag 3 which means they have met expectation.

Candidates who will post slightly below average results will be awarded 2 which means they are approaching expectation.

KPSEA candidates who are academically challenged but gifted in other areas will be awarded 1 which means they are below expectation.

According to the national examiner, unlike KCPE which depends on both Optical Marker Readers OMR machines and human labour, KPSEA national tests will purely rely on machines.

After assessment, the final KPSEA score will be an amalgamation from both the School Based Assessments (S.B.A) and  Summative National Assessments (S.N.A).

The School Based Assessment will account for 60% of the learners’ scores which is made up of assessments that candidates have been taking annually in Upper Primary classes which encompass Grades 4, 5 and 6.

School Based Assessments are usually executed by classroom teachers, under the guidance of KNEC. They are done in the form of Projects, Practicals, Portfolios and Oral Assessments.

The remaining 40% of the learners’ scores will be derived from the S.N.A otherwise known as the main KPSEA examination, which will be in the form of multiple-choice questions.

A final CBC certificate will be issued upon completion of Grade 12, as compared to the traditional issuance upon completing KCPE exams.

Results slips will be issued by KNEC after the completion of marking, which will be announced at a date yet to be confirmed.

The new 2-6-3-3-3 curriculum takes over the 32-year-old 8-4-4 curriculum.

Since switching from the 7-4-2-3 system in 1985, this will be the country’s second time adopting a new curriculum.

On Friday, November 25, the first batch of Grade 6 learners undertook rehearsals for the new Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) exams, which in the next one year fully replace the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) under the new Competence Based Curriculum (CBC).

The year 2022 saw some 1.3 million students sit for the KPSEA 2022 exams that were held between November 28 to 30.

The KPSEA candidates will then graduate and proceed to Grade 7 in January, where they will join Junior Secondary schools under the CBC program.

The subjects that were tested are Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, Integrated science (I.S) which entails Home Science, Agriculture, Science and Tech, and PHE.

Marking will be done using new technology and teachers will not be involved in the exercise now that there were no Insha and Composition scripts.
