The Kenya Coast National Polytechnic has got nine departments with various courses ranging from diploma to artisan levels.
KENYA COAST NATIONAL POLYTECHNIC APPLIED SCIENCES DEPARTMENT’S LIST OF COURSES- FOOD SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY
There are currently four sections in the Kenya Coast National Polytechnic’s department of applied sciences.
These are Pharmaceutical Technology, Applied Chemistry, Food Science &Technology and Applied Biology.
The department of applied sciences at the Kenya Coast National Polytechnic offers certificates and diplomas whose curriculum is approved by the Ministry of Education and examined by the Kenya National Examinations Council, KNEC to ensure quality.
This department has got three fully-equipped science laboratories and a pharmacy dispensing laboratory for practical lessons. The construction of four new laboratories for medical analysis, pharmaceutical practice, food processing and microbiology is underway.

DIPLOMA IN FOOD SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY

This course produces graduates who can work in industrial food processing, preservation and packaging companies.
They can also serve as quality assurance officers when it comes to food safety and principles of quality control.
DIPLOMA IN FOOD SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
KCSE mean grade of C- Minus or its equivalent.

DIPLOMA IN FOOD SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY ADMISSIONS
Admission for students wishing to undertake a diploma in food science technology is done every academic year.
DIPLOMA IN FOOD SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY COURSE OUTLINE AND DURATION
The course takes two years exclusive of the three months set aside for attachment.
The course involves both theoretical and practical lessons. Trainees undertake closely supervised attachments aimed at exposing them to real work situations.
MODE OF EXAMINATIONS
At the end of the two years, students are required to sit for an external KNEC exam to enable them to graduate.
There are also internal exams administered by the institute every term and at the end of every stage.
Exams include written exams, practical exams and project work.
Industrial attachment is also part of the exams.
Students at the Kenya Coast National Polytechnic usually go for field trips aimed at enhancing a deeper understanding of their course content.
Students are expected to go for three months of attachment to help them gain experience in their areas of specialization.
