KCSE Examiners Down Tools, Demand for Better Knec Payment Rates and Improved Services

Knec News Today; Knec KCSE Examiners now want the council to pay Kshs. 100 per script.
Knec Examiners marking the Kenya Certificate of Secondary School (KCSE) have halted the marking process citing poor pay and working conditions.
The latest Knec News Today reaching us at newspro.co.ke indicate that examiners currently stationed at St. Francis Mang’u Girls High School are on a go-slow.
It is therefore not business as usual at the Knec marking centres 2023.
CS Education Ezekiel arrived at the marking centre to arrest the situation before things got out of hand.
This is not the first time that KCSE examiners have decried poor payment rates.
In 2019, Physics examiners went on a demonstration against harsh working conditions and poor payment rates but Knec turned a blind eye.
In 2020, KCSE examiners contracted to mark KCSE English Paper three also aired their grievances. Unfortunately, Knec victimized some examiners by scrapping their names from the Knec Examiners List online.
The question is, for how long will KCSE examiners decry poor living conditions, low payment rates and delayed payment?
It is high time KUPPET took up the matter to solve this stalemate once and for all.
According to Payment details released by the Council, KCSE Knec Examiners are paid up to Kshs 80 to mark each script. At the end of the 14 or so days, Knec Examiners pocket up to Kshs 40, 000 an amount that is subjected to taxation.

Primary school heads who act as Centre Managers for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education, KCPE, exams pocket a daily subsistence allowance of 500 shillings; for a total of 4 days (including rehearsal day).
Secondary school Principals, on the other hand, earn a daily allowance of 500 shillings for 18 days. The highest-paid Supervisor walks away with a sum total of 12,510 shillings while the highest-paid invigilator gets 9860 shillings
The examiner does not pay deputy headteachers and Principals despite being present at the school present during the examination period as assistant Centre Managers.
KNEC also does not include payment of teachers handling science subjects who prepare and administer practicals during the KCSE examinations. Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) data, however, shows a total of 2,056,719 were registered for the tests scheduled to start in two weeks’ time. Of 1,225,693 will sit KCPE and 831,026 KCSE.
