Marking of the recently concluded  Kenya Certificate of Primary Education, KCPE 2020 national examinations by the  Kenya National Examinations Council, Knec is over 35% complete according to the education CS Professor George Magoha. 50% of the scripts have been marked now that Knec adopted a computerized system for marking multiple choice KCPE questions.

For Insha and Composition papers, the Kenya National Examinations council contracted approximately 7000 Examiners to mark them in designated marking centres within Nairobi.

Once the Knec assessment process is complete, the council will use a standardized system to grade the candidates which ranges from A to F. Grade A is awarded to the most outstanding KCPE candidates while grade E goes to the academically challenged ones.

On the other hand the Kenya certificate of Secondary education which is underway is set to end in approximately two weeks time.

After marking, the grading system used to evaluate perfomance of candidates uses letters and numerals as shown below

The numeric point scale ranges from 1-12 points and an expanded letter grading system which ranges from (A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, D-, E).

 

Grade A is awarded to the academically gifted candidates who later get placed in the best universities and are allowed to take courses like medicine and surgery.

Grade E on the other hand is awarded to candidates who have  outstanding issues with basic numeracy and literacy skills.

To join university, a candidate needs to attain a KCSE mean grade of C+ and above.

At University, the GPA is calculated to place them in various fields like engineering, business,education and medicine among others.

Those candidates who do not qualify for certification fall under the following categories as shown below depending on the prevailing circumstances.

In this case, a candidate will have a grade of:
U – it indicates a candidate has not met the criteria for a certificate award
W – it indicates KNEC has withheld a candidate’s results for various reasons
X – it indicates a candidate was not present throughout the exams
Y – it indicates KNEC has canceled a candidate’s results because of irregularities
Z – it indicates a candidate has not met the registration requirements

The Kenya National Examinations council is set to announce results for KCPE immediately marking is over.

However, the Candidates will have to wait untill July for them to join Secondary schools Depending on the marks with those scoring over 400 marks getting admission to the first tier of achools- national schools.

Candidates who are above average get admission to extra county secondary schools-in-kenya-portal the second tier of schools.

KCPE candidates who are average scoring 250 marks get admission to county secondary schools.

Selection of KCPE 2021 candidates to sub-county schools

Those with the lowest marks for instance 200 and below will be selected to join sub county schools which are the most under-resourced and poorly staffed.
