The Mwalimu SACCO branch was closed on April 7, 2020 for failing to observe simple coronavirus guidelines.

The order to shut down the Gusii Mwalimu SACCO’s office was given by Kisii County’s Department of Health and Sanitation.

Confirming the incident, Hezron Omayio the public health officer in Kisii County said the Gusii Mwalimu SACCO was allowing shareholders to congregate, a full disregard of President Uhuru Kenyatta and the Ministry of Health’s directives and measures.

“Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 in the country, it has come to the attention of the public health officials that the SACCO shareholders are congregating with full disregard of the Presidential directive and MOH advisory Ginst the same,” said Omayio.

The teachers failed to observe the rule of social distancing leading to unexpected closure.

Its sister SACCO Mwalimu National has since requested members to opt for mobile banking and adjusted the opening and closing hours.

Drastic measures are welcome in Kisii County especially since the county reported its first COVID-19 positive case on Tuesday April 7, 2020.
