Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna is demanding a statement from the Senate Committee on Education regarding the “persistent and systemic non-payment” of allowances to teachers.

Rising in the Senate, Sifuna condemned the delays, which affect educators who supervise extracurricular activities and national examinations. “It has become humiliating for teachers to accompany students to sports and other extracurricular activities without receiving their rightful allowances,” Sifuna declared. He pointed out that while students are fully facilitated, teachers are left “compromising their ability to secure decent accommodation and meet essential out-of-pocket expenses.”

The Senator highlighted that “these allowances remain unpaid even after teachers have diligently fulfilled their duties.”

Sifuna specifically demanded the reasons for the non-payment of allowances for the East African Secondary School Games in Kakamega and the Drama and Music Festivals in Kampala, both held in August 2025. He has requested a definitive timeline for their payment and policy recommendations to end the delays.
