CBE Guide: Subject Combinations for Grade 10 Career Choices
Schools and parents need to help Grade 9 students pick their career paths as they get ready to move to Grade 10 in Senior School.
Around 1.2 million Grade 9 students will be the first to choose from three career paths: STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), arts and sports, and social sciences. They still need to take Math, English, Kiswahili, and community service classes.
The Ministry of Education has listed subject combinations based on five main pathways: STEM (Applied Sciences), STEM (Pure Sciences), Arts & Sports, and STEM (Technical Studies).
Here’s a breakdown of the subject combinations:
1. Arts & Sports Pathway:
– Students can focus on theatre, film, and fine arts. If you choose Fine Arts, you can add subjects like Arabic, Biology, Business Studies, Computer Studies, and more.
– You can also combine music and dance with fine arts.
– If you focus on Theatre & Film or Music & Dance, you can choose from similar subjects.
– For those interested in physical education, the Sports & Recreation option allows similar subject choices.
2. Social Sciences Pathway:
– Students can study business and humanities. If you focus on Business Studies and History & Citizenship, you can add subjects like Arabic, Computer Studies, and more.
– Other combinations include CRE/IRE/HRE with Business Studies or Geography.
– You can also focus on Languages & Literature, taking Arabic and French, or Indigenous Language and Literature in English.
3. STEM, Applied Sciences Pathway:
– Students interested in Agriculture can add subjects like Biology, Chemistry, and more.
– You can also combine Agriculture with Computer Studies or Geography.
4. STEM, Pure Sciences Pathway:
– This pathway is more science-focused. You can choose combinations like Advanced Mathematics with Biology or Chemistry and Physics.
5. STEM, Technical Studies Pathway:
– This pathway offers vocational options. You can focus on Aviation and Business Studies or Building Construction and Business Studies.
Students will select their subject combinations online.
