Kenyan teachers have got reason to smile after their employer the Teachers Service Commission awarded a sh 9 billion medical cover with enhanced insurance packages to cater for their health care services.
According to The Standard, AON Minnet which is in charge of the health care of teachers has been awarded a new three-year contract to implement the enhanced benefits for the 318, 000 teachers.
Details of the new contract show that during the second year of implementing the contract, around sh 12 billion will be used.
Sh 14 billion will be used during the third and final year.
The teachers’ medical scheme is established based on the idea of pooling resources into a common fund that caters for eligible teachers and their dependents.
ENHANCED SERVICES
According to The Standard, all teachers and their dependents will now enjoy better and enhanced inpatient, maternity, dental, optical, group life and funeral cover.
This means that all teachers will have inpatient medical benefits raised to sh 750, 000 for those who fall in the lowest category Job Group G(B5) to a maximum of sh 2.5 million for Job Group R(D4).
The teachers will only pay sh 50 as co-pay to access dental, optical and outpatient doctor consultation services.
REPEATED VISITS
The sh 50 will however not apply if the teacher seeks the same services within seven days from the previous visit.
Also, those seeking medication for chronic health conditions may be required to pay more than just sh 50.
Members will get medication within Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda or Tanzania.
There will however be a provision for evacuation if the treatment is not locally available.
For international referrals, a flat rate of sh 1 million rate n will apply for all job groups.
Optical and dental covers will also receive a flat rate of sh 45,000 and sh 35,000 respectively.
Maternity cover has been enhanced to between sh 100, 000- sh 200, 000
